To explain away the hundreds of documented visions and spiritual manifestations experienced by early Saints, prominent LDS critics/Anti-Mormons have suggested that Joseph Smith somehow used hallucinogenic drugs (called entheogens) in sacraments to cause such experiences in his followers. While logically this theory is grasping for straws, Brian Hales nonetheless researched this topic thoroughly to provide a fact-based study about the possible use of entheogens by the early Saints.
